Manchester United fans are used to seeing youngsters named in their match day squad. But there was still plenty of excitement when Tahith Chong was named on the bench for the Champions League clash with Juventus this week.
The 18-year-old is widely regarded as one of United’s most promising young players. In fact, he could be their next great winger if he blossoms as some expect.
While Juventus showed United how far they have to go before they return to the Halcyon days of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, the match was the ideal opportunity for a new star to be born.
United are no strangers to super-subs. And the game was tailor-made for Chong to come off the bench and make a name for himself.
What harm would it do? United needed something different and Chong has the air of unpredictability. Instead Jose Mourinho failed to make a single change.
United are showing signs of improvement – at least in the second half – under Mourinho, but it could be time to give Chong his chance.
If Federico Macheda can become an instant hero at Old Trafford, anything is possible.
For now United are sticking with more experienced players. But it is a shame Chong was not given the chance to prove his worth. It worked for Marcus Rashford on the European stage. And in time some are tipping the Dutchman to be even better.
