Morgan Rogers says former Man Utd player is his idol amid transfer links

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers reveals he idolised former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo growing up.

Morgan Rogers has been linked to Manchester United since last season, after becoming one of Aston Villa’s top players under Unai Emery.

The England international enjoyed his breakthrough under Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, so a move to Old Trafford would see him form a reunion with the United head coach.

United have been linked with an array of left-backs and left wingers, with Rogers’ versatility across the attack making him an option for the latter.

Morgan Rogers idolised Cristiano Ronaldo

Rogers is going to compete at his first World Cup this summer after making Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad.

After an impressive season with Villa, finishing fourth in the Premier League ahead of Liverpool and winning the Europa League, Rogers has been tipped for a move away from the Midlands.

The 23-year-old will attract further attention if he performs strongly at the 2026 World Cup.

A potential move to United will excite the Villa star after revealing – in a quick-fire interview with Dazed – that he idolised Cristiano Ronaldo as a kid.

“Cristiano Ronaldo,” Rogers said.

“For me, the best to ever do it. I just think everything about him was different to what we probably seen before.

“He just brought that originality that I think I kind of took a shine towards.”

A transfer to United could see Rogers follow in his idol’s footsteps.

Rogers and Ronaldo will both be representing their countries at the 2026 World Cup. It will be intriguing to see if they will cross paths during the tournament.

What is the latest on Morgan Rogers?

There will be plenty of transfer speculation during the World Cup, but many deals will have to wait until the tournament is over before they can truly materialise.

Rogers has been linked with more clubs than just United, with Premier League champions Arsenal also in contention for his signature.

Villa are understandably reluctant to part ways with Rogers after securing Champions League football for next season, but many reports suggest that the player would be open to a move this summer.

According to talkSPORT, a deal for Rogers would force at least one member of Mikel Arteta’s squad out of the Emirates Stadium. The player most vulnerable is Gabriel Martinelli.

Martinelli has become a bit-part player at Arsenal after contributing just one Premier League goal last season.
