Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre believes that Andre Onana is making the same mistakes that David de Gea made before he left the club this summer.

The Cameroon international was deemed by Erik ten Hag as the man to replace David de Gea, who struggled to adapt to the modern game as a goalkeeper.

However, the former Inter Milan stopper has struggled at Manchester United so far, as the weight of the number 1 shirt at Old Trafford is currently weighing too heavy on the shoulders of the 27-year-old.

Silvestre on Onana

Speaking to Esports company GGRecon, the Frenchman has given his thoughts on the 27-year-old’s performances.

“Manchester United got rid of David de Gea because he was making mistakes and now André Onana is doing that too,” Silvestre said.

“There’s question marks surrounding the goalkeeping situation at the club at the moment and it needs resolving as soon as possible because this is the one position that can bring confidence to the entire team.

“The margin for error in the Premier League and the Champions League is so small that you can’t go around making these kinds of mistakes.”

Onana and De Gea

It seemed like Onana was always the man Ten Hag wanted to replace De Gea, who made a mistake in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

It’s clear that the former United club legend needed replacing and the hope will be that Onana, who performed superbly in the Champions League final against Manchester City, will come good once his confidence returns.

Despite his poor start, Onana has made an impact in possession with his array of passing and his ability to pick out his teammates forcing opposition forwards to back off from pressing him.

Onana’s time will come for United.
