Manchester United are still awaiting Mason Mount’s return to action.

Mason Mount has played only one match under Michael Carrick so far. Since then he has been out with an injury. The latest update appears to be good news, with the head coach confirming that Mount has returned to training at Carrington.

Since Mason Mount’s last appearance for Manchester United on January 17, Michael Carrick has provided regular updates on the midfielder’s fitness.

Carrick has consistently given the impression that Mount is not far away, but the midfielder is yet to make a matchday squad.

• February 5: “Mason sooner. He’s not too far away. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.”

• February 9: “Mason will probably not [be available] for Tuesday, probably after, but definitely going into the Everton game, he’ll be back.”

• February 20: “Mason is getting closer, we have to be patient with him, we don’t want to rush anything. He is getting closer.”

• February 27: “Mason is getting closer, he’s on the grass, he’s looking to train and be around it. We’ve just had to be patient really.”

• March 4: “We’ve got one or two we’re trying to work to get them back – Mason as well, he’s getting a bit closer. There’s always going to be people out, there’s always going to be people missing, but we’ll keep working as hard as we can to get them back.”

• March 13: “He’s not 100 per cent because he’s only trained for a small amount of time but he’s back [in training] and that’s good for us. We’ll see whether he’s involved or not on Sunday, but it’s a big step for him, so we’re happy with that.”

Carrick expressed hope for Mount’s role

Mason Mount came off the bench in the Manchester Derby and scored a late goal, only for it to be ruled out for a marginal offside.

Amid questions over where Mount fits into his plans, Carrick stated on January 30 that he had high hopes for him.

He explained: “Big fan of Mason, there is so many good things to like about him.

“That’s why we have a squad. I like Mason a lot and he is an important player for this team and this club.”
