Michael Carrick says Man Utd have a ‘variety’ of quality in position Ruben Amorim didn’t, ‘Great to have…’

The Emirates has been an unhappy hunting ground for Manchester United over the past couple of years, but Michael Carrick will be quietly confident this weekend.

We are a long way removed from the fiery rivalry the two sides had in the early 2000s between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

However, the game remains one of the biggest on the calendar for both, with Manchester United on a bad run at the Emirates in particular.

In fact, Manchester United haven’t beaten Arsenal away since 2017, which would make it even more impressive should Michael Carrick take points from the league leaders.

If United are to achieve this and disrupt the title race, it will be as a result of the brilliant attacking football we saw Carrick unleash in his first game in charge.

Michael Carrick praises Manchester United’s depth in attacking quality

The clash with Arsenal comes one week removed from United absolutely destroying Manchester City in a 2-0 win, which really could have been five or six.

So Arsenal will surely be wary of United’s quality going forward, and ahead of the game, Carrick has praised his squad.

With the change of formation, United suddenly has an abundance of attacking options, with three players currently vying for the striker role.

Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Joshua Zirkzee are all seen as possibilities to lead the line for United by Carrick. Speaking with the media in his pre-game press conference, he mentioned what all three do well.

“It is a variety in terms of strengths. I gave him [Mbeumo] a free role to drift. Ben [Sesko] is great on the line. Josh [Zirkzee] can do a bit of both; he is very good at bringing players into it.

“It is great to have that flexibility in terms of carrying the game to the later stages.”

This comes after Sesko was dropped against City, but Carrick has now explained that this doesn’t mean he won’t play going forward.

“It is not losing momentum. It was a team last week to go in a certain way. We are trying to improve him as much as possible. I don’t see it as anything else than pushing on and using what he has done as a stepping stone to do well here for a long time.”

This quality in depth is something Ruben Amorim simply didn’t have at United; however, it was his own fault really given his stubbornness and refusal to rotate or try new things.

HOW many goals do you think Benjamin Sesko will score this season for United?

Benjamin Sesko probably doesn’t start against Arsenal

While Carrick has made sure Sesko isn’t forgotten about, the chances are that the 6ft 5in number nine will once again be on the bench against Arsenal.

The head coach has made it clear that different strikers will be used for different things under him, and Arsenal is another game when we think Mbeumo will be picked as the starter.

Where Sesko should get a start is against teams where United will have the bulk of possession, so against Fulham and Spurs at Old Trafford, where Carrick will want to pin them in their own penalty box.

Here, the Slovenian will be key to use his aerial strengths and finishing to break deadlocks in ways Mbeumo couldn’t against a low block.

Sesko will add to his five goals, and it is just a matter of time.
