Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards has spoken out on the “frustrating” encounter between Manchester United and Fulham in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United’s FA Cup title defence came to an end on the weekend and Ruben Amorim’s men crashed out of the competition on penalties.

Marco Silva’s side arrived at Old Trafford and Fulham were 1-0 up going into half-time after Calvin Bassey broke the deadlock in the first half of injury time.

However, Bruno Fernandes netted the all-important equaliser for United in the second half and forced the fifth-round FA Cup tie to extra time.

Neither United nor Fulham were able to score in extra time and the FA Cup match had to be settled on penalties, with Marco Silva’s men coming out on top.

The Red Devils converted their opening three penalties, but Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Lindelof both saw their spot-kick efforts denied by Fulham’s Bernd Leno.

Fulham, on the other hand, saw all four of their spot-kick takers successfully convert and Silva’s side punched their ticket to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Richards talks three Man Utd players

Speaking on BBC One, Micah Richards admitted that Manchester United strikers Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund “didn’t have it” on the night for the Red Devils.

Rasmus Hojlund was hooked off in the 68th minute for Chido Obi-Martin and the 22-year-old Danish forward has not scored in his last 18 matches for United.

Zirkzee, on the other hand, played the entire match and missed his penalty, but the 23-year-old Netherlands striker failed to have a real impact in the final third.

Richards added that United became a “better team” when Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench in the 53rd minute of the FA Cup tie against Fulham.

“It was a frustrating game,” he said, as per BBC Sport.

“I thought Man Utd defended a lot better, I think in recent weeks they’ve not been great at all.

“But they had nothing going forward, Zirkzee and Hojlund were working so hard, but they just didn’t have it. They were a better team when Garnacho came on.

“I was a little disappointed with Fulham, I expected more because they’ve been so good this season.

“But they won’t care, the most important thing was getting over the line.”

Amorim on using Garnacho vs Fulham

Speaking after Sunday’s FA Cup exit, United manager Ruben Amorim spoke out on Alejandro Garnacho after the player came on for Manuel Ugarte in the match.

“Garna [Garnacho] is sometimes not in the right position to defend but in the perfect position for transition,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“We know that and we try to use that. I think it’s also sometimes the quality of the players – Bruno, Casemiro, Josh [Zirkzee] is improving a lot with the connections and he is fighting a lot for every ball all over the pitch.

“So, the players helped us create more chances.”
