Former Manchester City man Micah Richards has admitted he celebrated Harry Maguire’s goal for Manchester United against Copenhagen mid-week.

Harry Maguire has seen his Manchester United career turn around in recent weeks as he goes strength to strength.

His displays have won many over including Rio Ferdinand who praised Maguire’s United revival.

Maguire has now firmly established himself back in Erik ten Hag‘s plans, particularly in the absence of Lisandro Martinez.

Scoring the winner in the Champions League was a moment which Micah Richards couldn’t help but be delighted by.

Micah Richards on Maguire

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Richards put his allegiance to Manchester City aside to praise Maguire.

“It was just massive, obviously I’m the blue side of Manchester and when Maguire scored I was cheering like I was a Man United fan because of the amount of stick he’s had and what he’s overcome he’s so mentally strong.”

The English international was so good on Tuesday that he was named in the Champions League team of the week.

Now, Maguire has the chance to make himself a hero at the club, by shutting down Erling Haaland on Sunday.

Deserves a lot of credit

The position that Maguire found himself during the summer, was unwanted, with little interest.

He didn’t want to leave though instead opting to stay and prove himself at Old Trafford.

That is exactly what he has done, in the wake of multiple injuries to key players like Lisandro Martinez, he has been a catalyst for the improved performances this season.

He has played himself into an undroppable position and alongside Raphael Varane, has formed a really strong partnership.
