Scott McTominay has told a Manchester United fan Q&A that he recognises he needs to score more goals.
He said manager Erik ten Hag has raised this with him and told him to get on the scoresheet more often.
Elaborating, McTominay explained that Ten Hag’s words go beyond simple instructions.
He says the United boss shows him video clips of match situations and demonstrates how he can make little changes to his game to get into goalscoring positions.
He praised Ten Hag’s attention to detail and says he wants to repay his faith.
McTominay says he must score more goals
McTominay explained: “I should score more goals. The manager has actually spoken to me about that and shown me little clips and little ways I can be more effective in the game: making assists, scoring goals.
“If you do certain little details, then you can get yourself in those positions more often. I know that I can do it.
“I’ve always liked to fancy myself that I can score goals and stuff like that, so it’s important I keep practising and whenever the manager speaks to you, you’ve obviously got to listen and take it all on board.
“It’s really good information that he’s giving you. He’s like that with a lot of players, where he’ll sit them down and speak through clips of games – doing this, how you can influence this.
“Loads of fine little details that can help players and obviously give them confidence, putting his time into us, personally and not just in a group scenario.”
McTominay’s goal record
Scott McTominay has scored two goals for Manchester United so far this season – although none in the Premier League.
His first under Ten Hag was the winner against Omonia Nicosia in injury-time at Old Trafford to clinch a 1-0 victory.
The second goal was in the Carabao Cup in Manchester United’s 4-2 win over Aston Villa in early November, after a superb Alejandro Garnacho assist, a player he also paid tribute to in his Q&A.
McTominay has 18 career goals for United in 188 games for the club.
His best season was 2021/22 in which he scored seven times, but last season he only netted twice.
