Matheus Cunha returns to Man Utd training, injury boost before Liverpool clash

Manchester United face arch-rivals Liverpool and Matheus Cunha is back in contention to start at Old Trafford.

Eyebrows were raised when Matheus Cunha was left out of Manchester United’s squad to face Brentford last time out.

It was revealed that Cunha had an injury to his hip flexor which ruled him out, but the 26-year-old was always targeting a return against Liverpool.

Carrick held United training on Thursday afternoon and Cunha was pictured back in action at Carrington.

Confirmed by United’s official website, Cunha took part in group training on Thursday, meaning he could be in contention to start against Liverpool.

Cunha was the match winner as United beat Chelsea 1-0 in his last outing at Stamford Bridge, and he will be hoping to add to his goal tally against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being injured, Cunha was in attendance for United’s 2-1 win over Brentford on Monday.

Matheus Cunha must start vs Liverpool

Last time out, Carrick started Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo out wide against Brentford to fill the void left by Cunha.

Patrick Dorgu also returned to the matchday squad after overcoming an injury, and he will also be pushing to return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon.

But if Cunha is fit, he should be the first-choice option on the left for United. Cunha was outstanding against Liverpool in the reverse fixture at Anfield.

Both Amad and Mbeumo have suffered a slump in form, while Cunha has hit a new gear in recent weeks.
