Mateus Fernandes names Bruno Fernandes as his biggest idol in football straight after signing for Tottenham

Mateus Fernandes has revealed that Bruno Fernandes is his biggest football idol despite signing for Tottenham Hotspur after attracting interest from Manchester United.

It has been a busy few days at Tottenham.

The north London outfit has signed two midfielders who were under consideration at Manchester United.

While both deals prove there is no value in the market, it also raises questions about what United will do next. Ineos must find an adequate alternative target to help revamp the midfield department ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Which transfer targets do you NOT want Man Utd to sign?

Let's turn the transfer question on it's head, and give Jason Wilcox some advice…

Mateus Fernandes idolises Bruno Fernandes

It was no secret that United wanted to sign Fernandes from West Ham.

The Hammers demanded an £85m transfer fee for the 21-year-old ace, which United baulked at, before Tottenham reached an agreement with the Championship club.

United were not willing to match Tottenham’s offer. That doesn’t mean Fernandes snubbed United, like some other outlets want their readers to think.

In his first set of interviews with Tottenham’s club media, Fernandes dropped a hint that he would have jumped at the opportunity of linking up with his compatriot, Bruno Fernandes, at Old Trafford.

During a TikTok Q&A, Fernandes named the United captain as his idol in football.

The only way Tottenham’s new signing will get to play with his idol is by establishing himself in the Portugal national team. That is not something he has achieved yet, despite costing Tottenham a whopping £85m.

Is this a little harsh on Marcus Rashford? Do you feel the same way?

Mateus Fernandes and Bruno Fernandes share Sporting CP connection

Both players played for Sporting CP before moving to the Premier League.

Fernandes established himself as a world-class attacking midfielder at Sporting between 2017 and 2020.

Meanwhile, the younger Fernandes joined Sporting CP’s academy in 2016, spending his earlier years watching the Portuguese Magnifico star in the senior team.

It would have been a quality story had they formed a reunion at Old Trafford this summer, but it just wasn’t to be.
