Mateus Fernandes’ first words at Tottenham will frustrate Manchester United fans

Mateus Fernandes has now officially completed his move to Tottenham after Manchester United decided not to bid.

Manchester United spent weeks negotiating for Mateus Fernandes but Ineos were not willing to meet West Ham’s £85 million asking price.

Tottenham were willing to match that fee, and there are also reports that Fernandes has been given a £250,000 per week wage in North London.

United fans were glad to not sign Fernandes given the amount of money being demanded, and the Red Devils are now quickly moving onto alternative targets.

Mateus Fernandes’ first words as a Tottenham signing

During the lengthy transfer saga, it was repeatedly reported that Fernandes preferred United and was even “desperate” to play alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Ultimately, if United matched the Tottenham bid, Fernandes would be holding up a red shirt right now, not a white one.

But on his Tottenham unveiling, Fernandes’ words will cut deep for United fans.

“I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join,” Fernandes said.

“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.

“I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the club.”

Mateus Fernandes’ decision was financial, not sporting

Obviously Fernandes is going to speak highly of Tottenham after arriving as their record signing, but United fans know the real truth.

From a sporting perspective, United’s project is more exciting than Tottenham. United offer Champions League football and a pathway to a title challenge in 2028.

But Ineos were not willing to overspend, or offer extreme wages to Fernandes.

United are being patient and waiting for market opportunities, while Ineos also want players who are desperate to represent the club.
