Mason Mount return vs FC Twente could be perfectly timed, he has demolished them before

Mason Mount could make his return to action for Manchester United against FC Twente in the Europa League this week.

Mason Mount was on the bench at the weekend for Manchester United against Crystal Palace, an unused substitute, returning to the squad ahead of schedule.

He should see action this week in the Europa League, with an element of rotation expected, as he looks to kick on after an encouraging start to the season prior to his injury.

And if Mount lines up against Twente this week, the opponents will bring back a few memories.

Mason Mount starred vs FC Twente

In his early years at Chelsea, Mason Mount was sent out on loan to Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem.

It was a loan spell which was the making of him, prior to a stint at Derby in the Championship before cracking Chelsea’s first team.

At Vitesse, Mount managed to catch Erik ten Hag’s eye, with The Evening Standard reporting the then Utrecht boss started tracking his progress, even later trying to sign him for Ajax.

This week’s opponents Twente, learned the hard way what Mason Mount was capable of, in both Eredivisie matches.

In their first match, Mount scored an equalising goal to secure a 1-1 draw away from home for Vitesse, before putting on a masterclass on home turf.

In the return game, Mount scored one goal and laid on an assist for another, with Vitesse demolishing Twente 5-0.

It’s also worth noting that one of Mount’s teammates that day was former Manchester United left-back Alexander Buttner, who recently re-signed for Vitesse this summer after leaving in 2019.

Mason Mount’s season so far

Mason Mount played every single match in pre-season for Manchester United, plus the Community Shield.

He was then selected to start the first two Premier League games, before being substituted with an injury against Brighton.

This followed the same pattern from last season, where Mount started the first two games, and then missed a month through injury.

The problem last season was that the injury problems recurred, pretty much throughout the season, and he started only three more Premier League matches.

This time around Mount is hoping for more consistency, and opportunity to show what he can do.

The midweek fixture at home to Twente is lined up as an appealing one for him, whether he starts or is on the bench, he will have happy memories of his past clashes against them, netting on both occasions.
