Manchester United made seven changes to the team which lost to City, and slumped to another defeat, this time against Newcastle.

The rot has set in at Manchester United and it feels like it is a long way back from here.

Erik ten Hag tried to change his team selection around, and was repaid with a 3-0 home defeat and elimination from the Carabao Cup.

Mason Mount was one of the players brought into the team. And pictures taken at full-time show he looked absolutely devastated.

Mason Mount poor start

Mason Mount has had a terrible start at Manchester United so far. Let’s not sugar coat this.

That is not all down to him. He was brought into the team on a naive idea from Erik ten Hag that he could partner Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in midfield. We saw early this season how that left the team wide open.

Mount then picked up an injury, before recovering and providing an assist in the last round of the cup against Palace. But then in the league against the Eagles, he struggled.

Recently Mount has lost his place, dropped from the team for the derby, and was not selected for a single minute against Copenhagen.

Last night was a real chance for the England midfielder, and while you can’t pin the defeat on him and say ‘he blew it’, the performance and result did not work out for him at all.

Aside from a long range shot at the end of the first half, Mount did not threaten at goal, completed only 77 per cent of his passes and created no chances.

At full-time he looked devastated as he trudged off the pitch. He looks lost.

Mason Mount tough 2023

We should not forget, this has been a really tough whole 2023 for Mason Mount. He was part of a Chelsea side early in the year which went into freefall.

He lost his form with it, before picking up an injury which ended his season early. He has not yet regained his form at Manchester United.

With the added burden of the number seven shirt for the midfielder, Mount is finding it really tricky. He needed the win last night more than any player on the pitch.
