Manchester United are seemingly set to receive a boost to their seemingly never-ending fitness issues this season with two players reportedly nearing a return.

United have struggled this season with injuries being a key reason behind these struggles early on which has seen, at times, up to 11 different players either injured or suspended.

United start their Champions League campaign this week with a tough trip away to Bayern Munich awaiting them and there is hope that two players will return.

Mason Mount and Raphael Varane could be set to return this week, if not against Bayern then hopefully against Vincent Kompany’s Burnley on Saturday night.

What has Ten Hag said

Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, Ten Hag chose to strike an upbeat tone about the pair’s prospects of returning to the first team.

“Both are in a good place,” he said. “They are shortly coming [towards] a return.”

This would be a welcome boost to United’s chances of improving this season and the pair, particularly Varane, could be crucial to arresting the side’s bad form in the Premier League.

Importance of injured players returning

It can’t be emphasised enough, that the return of the pair for either the Bayern Munich game or the Burnley game would be a huge boost for the Dutchman.

Varane has arguably been the club’s best defender this season and the Frenchman’s return would hopefully solve some of the defensive issues that the Red Devils are currently suffering with.

Varane, who scored the decisive goal on the opening day of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, will add the leadership qualities and the superb one-on-one defensive qualities that he offers in abundance.

Mount’s return would surely oust Scott McTominay in the starting lineup with the former Chelsea midfielder needing to prove his worth after United spent £55 million on the 24-year-old.
