Mason Greenwood needs to repeat his only league goal for Manchester United this season

Mason Greenwood has only scored one Premier League goal this season. And now Manchester United will be desperate for him to repeat the feat against the same opponents.

The teenager’s only top-flight goal in the current campaign came against West Ham back in December. And the pressure is on with United likely to be without Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani this weekend.

If Greenwood is United’s only recognised senior striker for a vital clash, he has to step up. There is no doubt his confidence is low, but goals are fuel for forwards and one against the Hammers could be all he needs to get back on track.

Still only 19, Greenwood will have the patience of his club. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows more than most the pressure on young strikers having been one himself.

But this weekend there is no hiding place for United’s teen sensation.

Last season, Greenwood scored 17 goals for United, including 10 in the league. This time round, he has managed just four in all competitions and that sole top-flight strike.

The arrival of Cavani, the form of Rashford and the fact that Greenwood is still a teenager have all played their part. But United fans know what a talent they have on their hands and won’t be too disheartened.

Undeniably one of the best young attackers in Europe, Greenwood needs to seize his chance this weekend.

If he plays in between Amad Diallo and Dan James, there should be plenty of chances. The pace and trickery of that pair means Greenwood can find space to exploit.

If he makes it two league goals this season against West Ham, United can shake off Thursday’s disappointment and build on the derby result at the business end of the campaign.
