Marcus Rashford has been told how he can emulate Roy Keane’s leadership skills at Manchester United but in a different way.
Manchester United have struggled massively this campaign and part of the reason for this has been the struggles of star forward Marcus Rashford.
For Erik ten Hag, Rashford netted 30 goals in all competitions last season and the English winger was rewarded with a new contract by the club, but this campaign has been anything but plain sailing.
Rashford was in trouble for his antics in Belfast but the Englishman was reinstated into the first team and netted a superb goal for the Red Devils against Wolves in the 4-3 win over Gary O’Neil’s side.
Carragher on Rashford
This summer transfer window looks to be one that will lead to a big clearout at Old Trafford with Casemiro and Raphael Varane, two of the more experienced players in the team, potentially on their way out of the club.
If these two players are to leave the club, United may well be without leaders in the dressing room and one player who could be charged with being the leader of the team is Rashford.
Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Rashford has to be a different type of leader to that of former United icon Roy Keane.
“Roy Keane only started to assume the mantle of being the dominant inspirational character at the age of 26 at Manchester United, but Marcus Rashford is nothing like Roy Keane in personality or character.
“Marcus Rashford doesn’t need to be like Roy Keane, he must lead and show character in a different way. Someone like Steven Gerrard, who was a completely different player to Marcus Rashford.
“I’m not saying Rashford needs to go round shouting at everyone, but his body language needs to change and be the person, you want him to be when someone becomes a leader.”
Rashford to be the next leader?
Despite Bruno Fernandes being the current club captain, the new contract that Rashford signed last summer means the will surely outlast the Portuguese star.
If Fernandes does leave the club in the near future, Rashford will surely take up the mantle of being the club captain and the Englishman will have to step up consistently.
Rashford has certainly proved in the past that he can carry the team in an attacking sense and he will have to prove that again as the season enters its final stage.
