Marcus Rashford says his ambition is to win the Champions League

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has big ambitions and is making no secret of them.

The forward says his top target is to win the Champions League, along with the Premier League.

Winning England’s top flight was once routine for United. But next May will mark 10 years since United last lifted the trophy.

United last won the Champions League in 2008, falling short in two subsequent finals, the last coming in 2011.

Rashford has won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League early in his career – but has been part of a United side which has gone trophyless since 2017, experiencing cup final losses in 2018 and 2021.

Speaking to the club website, Rashford laid out his ambitions, while accepting that United are restarting a rebuild to get back to the level to which he aspires.

He said: “I want to win the biggest trophies. I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play in finals for the club, win finals for the club, and have a few trophies under my name, but I want to get the big trophies – I want to get the Premier League, the Champions League. 

“But we can’t expect to just jump back to those heights. This season we’ve showed at times that we can compete with the best teams in the league, and then we’ve showed that there’s no room to switch off.

United hired new manager Erik ten Hag in the summer and he has instilled new belief in the team, providing players and fans with reason to be optimistic.

Victories over Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have helped with the excitement, but United still lie in fifth place, 11 points off the top, so there is plenty of work to do.

Rashford has been a key part of this, scoring his 100th goal for United recently and leading the scoring charts this season with seven, already bettering his paltry tally of five the previous season.

There is a key decision ahead for Manchester United over Marcus Rashford’s contract, which expires at the end of the season. His performances this season have earned an extension and would be a surprise if United let him go.

A shortcut for Rashford would be to leave for another club to try and satisfy his Champions League ambition elsewhere, but with the club moving in the right direction, expect him to stay put.
