One of Manchester United’s most important pieces of summer business is securing an extension for Marcus Rashford.
A year ago there would have been plenty of dissent among the fanbase if a contract renewal was announced for Marcus Rashford. After a five-goal season, he hadn’t earned it.
Last summer may in hindsight have been the time for United to ‘buy low’ and extend Rashford’s deal, but this is one of the factors which went into making the forward’s 2022/23 campaign so special.
A highly motivated Rashford has just had his best ever season with 30 goals, also winning the player of the year award.

Now time for Manchester United and Marcus Rashford to strike a deal
There were reports mid-season over Rashford’s contract which were rubbished by the player. The Daily Star had claimed he was holding out for £400,000 per week.
Rashford hit out on social media, writing: “Can we please stop making up these stories? Mines and the clubs objectives are to hopefully get into the champions league this season. This isn’t helpful. Thank you.”
With the season now over, contract talks can no longer be viewed by Marcus Rashford as a distraction.
And a report over the weekend via The Sun claims a deal is only a matter of time.
Quoting an unnamed source, the report states: “Marcus is staying at United. He was waiting to see if the club got in the Champions League and now they have, he is delighted.
“He loves playing for Ten Hag and believes he has delivered on all of his promises. Both sides want the same thing, for Marcus to sign and stay at United for many more years.”
Well, now is the time for club and player, and his representatives, to sit down and thrash out new terms to get a deal tied up.
United do not want this dragging into next season, or even looming over pre-season preparations. This is every bit as important as tying up a deal for any new signing.
Rashford holds the power at this point. His deal expires in June 2024 and United do not want him to leave. The club will be doing everything possible to retain his services, and any new owners will view an extension as crucial.
To have an academy player come through and finish as top scorer with 30 goals and win the player of the year award is priceless. When it gets done, this is an announcement every supporter wants to see.
