Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are so much better when they are together

Marcus Rashford scored his first competitive Manchester United goal since January when he struck against Liverpool at Old Trafford last night.

Rashford finished one on one past Alisson after being put through on goal by a perfectly executed pass from Anthony Martial, who had only come on as substitute eight minutes earlier.

This was Marcus Rashford’s first goal since his winner against West Ham back on January 22.

Now exactly seven months on, Rashford’s goal drought in a United shirt ended. The common denominator was Anthony Martial.

Rashford and Martial partnership

Rashford’s last goal before this one, against West Ham, was Anthony Martial’s last competitive match in a Manchester United shirt.

Martial had come off the bench as a late substitute in that game and played a key role in the build-up to the winner.

Days later Martial left the club on loan, feeling the need to explore a move elsewhere to see what he was capable of, signing with Sevilla.

Martial had an unhappy spell at Sevilla, scoring only once, struggling with injuries.

Marcus Rashford fared even worse without him. He didn’t score a single goal at United without Martial by his side.

Both players lost their places in the international squads for England and France, before showing signs of rekindling their old partnership in pre-season.

Injury delayed Martial’s start to the season, to United’s detriment, before Martial’s half-time introduction against Liverpool.

The pair have worked so well together in the past, Martial knows where Rashford will be, and he seems to bring out the best in him. Last night was further evidence of their connection.

Both players can play a key role for United this season, so long as they have each other.
