Marco Asensio to Manchester United: Jorge Mendes pulling the strings to offer winger to Red Devils

Real Madrid are making big moves in the transfer market, recently wrapping up a deal for Aurelien Tchouameni. To balance the books, expect some outgoings too.

One potential departure which persists is Marco Asensio, with The Mirror reporting earlier this month the winger has been offered to Manchester United. Mundo Deportivo suggested this weekend that United lead the race to sign him.

Asensio’s agent is Jorge Mendes, who is pulling the strings to try and get his client a big move, after he joined his agency earlier in 2022. He has had some success with United in the past.

The winger told Diario AS: “This is an important moment and I will have to make important decisions.”

Marco Asensio to Manchester United: What you need to know

CONTRACT EXPIRING: Asensio has only one year remaining on his Real Madrid contract, so he could be secured at a knockdown price.

CRAZY RELEASE CLAUSE: The Mirror report Asensio has a crazy release clause of £590 million. Nobody was ever going to pay this, and certainly won’t with one year left of his deal remaining.

GOAL SCORING WINGER: Asensio scored 10 goals in 31 La Liga games this season, of which 19 were starts. The majority of these came from the right wing.

REBOUNDED FROM INJURY: He tore his ACL in pre-season for Real Madrid against Arsenal in 2019. He returned to action 11 months later and has since got back to his best.

BEST SEASON YET: Asensio’s 12 goals in all competitions last season was his career best, bettering the 11 he scored in 2017/18. At 26, he has plenty more to offer.

BIG GOAL: Asensio can boast of a goal in the Champions League final, scoring in Real’s 2017 win over Juventus.

What they say…

Carlo Ancelotti told AS: “He’s a player with extraordinary quality. He had a serious knee injury which left him out for a long time and with a slow rehabilitation. He’s an important player who has helped us. I don’t know what will will happen regarding his future.”

Former Real Madrid and Spain boss Vicente del Bosque talked him up in 2017, telling Marca: “He has personality, he is sure of his ability, he is not cowardly or ‘normal’, which is a very good thing. I think with Marco we could have a world-class player.”

Asensio has of course already played alongside Mendes client Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, telling Marca: “I can’t imagine playing without him. Ronaldo has been, is and will be very important for us. Real Madrid and him always have to go together.”

Verdict on Asensio to United

At 26, Asensio still has plenty to offer. This isn’t a situation like Raphael Varane, where Real sold United a player who, while still quality, probably has his best days behind him.

Asensio scored 12 goals last season and has hit double figures three times for Real Madrid. With just one year left on his deal, United could probably get him for £30 million or less.

At present United’s priority on the right-wing is Ajax winger Antony, who Erik ten Hag could sign for a second time. And rightly so.

But if this deal isn’t possible, Asensio could be a useful right-wing alternative, while United develop Amad and Facundo Pellistri as players for the future, rather than asking them to do too much now.

We would suspect Asensio ends up elsewhere, and Mendes is using United to hike up interest in the winger, although we don’t doubt United have been offered the chance to sign him. Now it’s up to Erik ten Hag to weigh it up.
