Manchester United got their first win of the pre-season against West Ham on the USA tour at the first time of asking, and Manuel Ugarte had a huge role to play in it.

Manuel Ugarte started alongside Kobbie Mainoo in a deeper midfielder role just days after Ruben Amorim’s transfer demand to Ineos.

Ugarte was everywhere vs West Ham, and despite not having any direct goal involvements, was the best player on the pitch in the 2-1 win against the Hammers.

After the game, Ugarte spoke to the media in the mixed zone and revealed what Ruben Amorim has asked of him this season. He has started doing it already.

Ugarte was expected to be the biggest beneficiary of Amorim as Man Utd manager since he played his best football under him at Sporting.

It didn’t exactly pan out that way, as Ugarte took time to adjust to the Premier League, which is why his debut season was up-and-down.

However, Amorim recently said Ugarte is better now, feeling adjusted and ready to show his best to Man Utd fans.

Ugarte said after the 2-1 win against West Ham that Amorim has demanded two things of him this season.

He said: “[Ruben Amorim] told me to recover the ball as soon as possible. Try to have intensity and try to speak a lot, communicate with everyone.

“I play in the middle, so I have a connection with everyone. Try to speak and organise.”

Man Utd will see the best of Ugarte this season

Ugarte’s command over the language has already come leaps and bounds from last season, and getting the trust of his manager will see him thrive.

Casemiro usurped Ugarte last season, but with the Brazilian another year older, he is declining at the same time as Ugarte is reaching his peak.

Now that his role has been simplified, and Amorim is empowering him to become another leader in the squad, the best of Ugarte should be seen this season.

His off-the-cuff, combative playing style is already conducive to becoming a fan favourite soon, and if he adds quality on the ball and consistency to his game, then the sky is the limit.

He has started at the perfect rhythm already.
