Manchester United’s loss at Everton could have ramifications for Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek will have likely been keeping a close eye on how Manchester United fared against Everton on Saturday.

The Dutchman did have more important matters to attend to, as his partner gave birth to their first child.

But van de Beek’s parent club produced yet another toothless and lifeless performance which has been a reoccurring nightmare for Manchester United fans to endure this season.

However, the 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park against Frank Lampard’s side isn’t likely to do van de Beek’s playing prospects on Merseyside any favours at all.

The 24-year-old has missed Everton’s last four games and he may struggle to reclaim his place in the side.

Van de Beek hasn’t played since the 1-0 defeat against Wolves which came at Goodison a month ago.

In the time the former Ajax man has been absent, Lampard’s side have won back-to-back home games.

Everton’s number 30 was in the starting line-up for last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham, but he picked up a thigh injury in the warm up and his place was taken by Mason Holgate.

The Dutch international was ineligible to face Ralf Rangnick’s Reds on Saturday, but the Toffees produced an energetic and battling performance, in their fight to beat the drop, without him.

Everton don’t play again until a week on Wednesday (20 April), when they host Leicester City.

But in Everton’s win against United, Lampard went with a midfield three of Allan, Alex Iwobi and the returning Fabian Delph, who was making his first appearance for four months.

With Everton’s chances of getting relegated, Lampard needed his side to fight for survival.

His midfield three threw themselves into tackles and won their duels against United, van de Beek on the other hand is more of a midfield technician who wants his side to dominate possession.

The blueprint of Everton’s victory against United could see Lampard adopt the same midfield combination in the weeks ahead at van de Beek’s expense.

It seems that Manchester United are having an impact on Donny van de Beek’s chances of playing even when he isn’t at Carrington.

United’s number 34 will be hoping for a change in fortunes and that turn could come in the shape of his former manager Erik ten Hag being appointed as the Red Devils permanent manager.
