Manchester United were knocked out of last season’s Carabao Cup at the third round stage to David Moyes’ West Ham United.
The Hammers beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reds at Old Trafford through a Manuel Lanzini strike.
The Norwegian would have been unware of the time, but being knocked out of the League Cup proved to be the beginning of the end for the ‘baby-faced assassin’.
Solskjaer was only in charge for another ten matches following the defeat to the Irons, five of which were defeats and the 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road proved to be the end of his tenure.

Like Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag will see the Carabao Cup as a good opportunity to win his first piece of silverware and lift United’s first trophy since 2017.
Having beaten Aston Villa 4-2 at Old Trafford in the third-round, Ten Hag’s men face Vincent Kompany’s Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, with a spot in the quarter-finals on the line.
United in Focus takes a look at Manchester United’s last Carabao Cup fourth-round XI ahead of the round of 16 clash against the Clarets.
Manchester United’s last Carabao Cup fourth-round XI
United’s last fourth-round outing in the Carabao Cup fourth-round saw us beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 at the Amex Stadium in September 2020 when games were being played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.
Goals from Scott McTominay, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba booked United’s place in the last-eight.
Our starting XI that day was: Henderson, Dalot, Lindelof, Bailly, Williams, McTominay, Fred, van de Beek, Mata, James, Ighalo.
Victor Lindelof, Brandon Williams, McTominay and Donny van de Beek will be hoping to start against Burnley having featured in this month’s winter friendlies against La Liga sides Cadiz and Real Betis.
Van de Beek started against Cadiz and was due to start against Betis, but he was replaced in the XI by academy midfielder Isak Hansen-Aaroen with no explanation given.
Dean Henderson and Eric Bailly are currently in the midst of season-long loan spells away from Old Trafford with Nottingham Forest and Marseille respectfully.
Whereas Juan Mata, Daniel James, former £15m signing from Swansea City and Odion Ighalo are no longer at the club.
Diogo Dalot and Fred are unlikely to start against the Championship leaders given they are yet to return to Carrington following their World Cup exploits.
With Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur already out of the 2022-23 competition and Manchester City and Liverpool facing one and other in the fourth-round, the draw is opening up nicely for Ten Hag’s Reds to go all the way.
The 2022-23 Carabao Cup final, which will be played at Wembley, is scheduled for Sunday February 26, 2023
