Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi targeting January loan move

Manchester United youngster Teden Mengi has told the club’s media that he would accept a January loan move if an offer were forthcoming.

The 20-year-old, who didn’t form part of Erik ten Hag’s travelling squad for Tour 22, only made his return to action from injury last month.

Since coming off the bench in the EFL Trophy penalty shootout loss to League One side Fleetwood Town, during the group stage of the competition, Mengi has started the last six games across all competitions for United’s Under-21s.

Mengi has captained United’s Under-21s, who are managed by Mark Dempsey in Premier League 2 and Travis Binnion in the EFL Trophy, in the last three league games, as well as wearing the armband in the defeat to Monaco in the Premier League International Cup.

Yesterday’s EFL Trophy penalty shootout win, following a goalless 90 minutes, against Wolves Under-21s at Molineux was Mengi’s first clean sheet of the season.

Following last night’s win in the Black Country, Mengi spoke about how he’s working his way towards full fitness and that he would be more than happy to leave the club on loan during the January transfer window.

“Every game, I’m feeling fitter, stronger, sharper,” he told club media, following the game at Wolves.

“So yeah, I think I’m standing myself in good stead for January, if the option comes up for me to get an opportunity to go out on loan and impress and get some more experience, then I’ll take it.”

The England Under-20 international joined Championship side Birmingham City on loan in January and made ten appearances for the Blues, before returning to Carrington early from his loan spell at St Andrew’s after picking up an injury.

The season prior, Mengi spent some time on loan at Derby County who were managed by Manchester United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney at the time. United’s number 43 made nine appearances for The Rams.

Mengi has two first team appearances for the Red Devils to his name with him being handed his senior debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Europa League against Austrian side LASK in August 2020.

In December 2021, when Ralf Rangnick was in interim charge, Mengi came on at left-back during the Champions League dead rubber against Swiss outfit Young Boys.

If Mengi can prove his fitness between now and when the January transfer window opens, then the centre-back will likely attract interest from Football League clubs.

The big challenge for Mengi, if he does go out on loan, will be staying fit and establishing himself in the side’s starting line-up.
