Manchester United youngster Matej Kovar first Burton Albion appearance
Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar has made his Burton Albion debut after starting in this week’s Birmingham Senior Cup clash.
The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat against Leamington.
It was the Czech Republic under-21 international’s first appearance for the League One side since joining on transfer deadline day in January.
Upon his move to Burton, Kovar also signed a new contract at Manchester United, extending his deal until June 2023, with the option of an additional year’s extension.
Kovar is yet to feature for the Burton first team and has been an unused substitute in all nine league games he has been selected in since joining the club on loan until the end of the season.
However, upon signing Kovar on deadline day, Burton boss Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink explained that the young Czech stopper was brought to the club to provide competition to Ben Garratt in the Brewers goal.
“Kovar will come in and make life hard for Ben and provide some good competition at the club,” said Hasselbaink to the club’s website.
“He will add some great competition, he is a young keeper and we felt like we needed another one in the door.”
The move to Burton is Kovar’s second loan spell in League One after making 21 appearances at Swindon Town last season before being recalled in January 2021.
Kovar made 12 appearances for Neil Wood’s Manchester United under-23 side this season before making the move to the Pirelli Stadium.
Although Kovar isn’t getting regular first team minutes under Hasselbaink, the former Leeds and Chelsea striker explained prior to his arrival that he wasn’t guaranteed game time.
But instead of finishing the season playing academy football, which Matej Kovar has outgrown, he will be continuing his development and gaining vital experience by being part of a first team set up at senior level.
