Manchester United target Wout Weghorst was a childhood Liverpool fan

Manchester United now want to sign Wout Weghorst, who has previously admitted he was a childhood Liverpool fan.

Fabrizio Romano, among others, have reported that United’s striker search has led them to the Dutchman, who is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley.

He was highly rated when he was at Wolfsburg but his time at Turf Moor did not go to plan as they were relegated and he was subsequently loaned out.

In May 2020, he said that he dreams of playing for Liverpool, although he did admit he has affection for a number of English teams.

Weghorst has said he supported Liverpool

As per TeamTalk, he said: “I still get goosebumps from ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there.

“I am ambitious and want to get ahead. Maybe at some point play at another club, whether in Germany or in England? But at the moment it is still far away. I feel good and try to achieve the maximum here.”

In 2018, he also told De Telegraaf: “I’ve dreamt of [playing for Liverpool] since childhood.”

He was linked with Liverpool in the past but it never happened and the Reds have already signed a Dutch forward this month, pinching Cody Gakpo from under United’s noses.

Erik ten Hag has earned the trust of United fans by now. Not one of his summer signings has been a bust and he has recently been emphasising the importance of getting the right kind of characters into the club.

Rightly or wrongly, we all knew that United would not spend huge money on a forward this month, with the sale of the club hanging overhead and the summer spend apparently being over budget.

So whoever we got in was always going to come with a question mark; they were never going to be a bona fide world star.

Weghorst is in that range; his time at Burnley was underwhelming but before that he was sensational at Wolfsburg and rightly highly rated.

Perhaps his previous admission he supported Liverpool will mean he has to go the extra mile with fans, but there is plenty of work to be done on his transfer before we get to that point.
