Manchester United’s hunt for a right-back to compete with Diogo Dalot is currently pointing in the direction of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg report United have been scouting Frimpong, who has scored five goals in 11 matches this season.

Frimpong, 21, has enjoyed a steady rise to become a Bundesliga star, and he can reach a new level with a move to Manchester United.

The youngster began his career in City’s academy, before Celtic signed him for a cut-price £300,000.

Celtic were unable to hold onto Frimpong for long, with Leverkusen paying £11 million for his services after 18 months in Scotland.

Frimpong ‘outstanding talent’

Former Celtic and Omonia boss Neil Lennon spoke very highly of Frimpong and was delighted to work with him.

Lennon told The Sun: “You can see what a player Frimpong is. He’s one of the best kids I’ve ever seen at that age.

“I’m just delighted what he brings to the game – defensively, offensively and the end product. He’s an outstanding talent.”

Leverkusen snapped him up in 2021 in the same transfer window they signed Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Manchester United, and the ex-Red Devils star has been playing second fiddle.

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told the Bundesliga website, “he’s technically strong, incredibly fast and is an attack-minded player. He has huge potential.”

Manchester United are not the only side paying attention. German outlet Sport1 linked Bayern Munich with a move for Frimpong earlier this year for around £25 million.

Manchester United may have to wait

Manchester United’s path to sign Jeremie Frimpong is not simple, due to finances. After a big summer spend, the January transfer window is not currently projected to be a hectic one.

Striker is considered to be United’s priority if a move is made, and a move for Frimpong will likely depend on finding a new club for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The former Crystal Palace right-back will have to be sold at a loss on the money United paid for him, but this is a situation the Red Devils simply have to accept, bite the bullet, and let him go.

This will free up the funds for a move for Frimpong – but the speed of a potential Wan-Bissaka sale will determine when United step up pursuit of the Leverkusen defender.
