Manchester United’s talks with Ajax over Lisandro Martinez are set to enter ‘key stages’, says Fabrizio Romano.
United have a meeting with Ajax on Wednesday in an attempt to thrash out a deal for the centre-back.
Martinez is keen on a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United favourites due to Erik ten Hag, who signed him for Ajax.
Goal report rivals Arsenal have backed off, although stop short of saying they have pulled out completely.

Romano says the deal is entering the ‘key stages’ with Ajax open to a sale at the right price.
United’s last offer for Martinez was £43 million, De Telegraaf reported on Friday. The latest report from Voetbal Primeur suggested Ajax would be ready to deal at £46 million (55m Euros).
United are also attempting to close a deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong. Chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough were in the Spanish city on Monday for talks.
It’s unclear if they could be heading to Amsterdam to attempt to close the Martinez deal.
United have had good relations with Ajax, where Edwin van der Sar is CEO, but the Dutch side are reluctant to lose too many players, having already seen some key departures this summer.
Another Ajax player on United’s radar is Antony, The Times report, but the Martinez deal is easier to do, as the two clubs are far closer on price.
With just a reported £3 million between the two clubs’ valuations, this could be a deal United wrap up quickly.
