Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton proved a very capable stand-in as the squad prepare for Andre Onana.

Andre Onana was not quite ready for his Manchester United debut at the weekend against Arsenal. In his absence, veteran Tom Heaton put in a performance the £43 million arrival would have been proud of.

Heaton made an impressive double save from Gabriel Martinelli in the first half and kept a clean sheet to ensure United are yet to concede in three pre-season matches.

The veteran transmitted confidence through the defence, determined to make the most of his opportunity.

Tom Heaton determined to impress

Tom Heaton only made one competitive appearance last season. An uncertain future awaits as he enters the final year of his deal at the club.

Speaking to MUTV at full time, he said: “I felt great. I love playing. I said that when I first came to the club.

“It’s challenging at times not playing, but every opportunity I get, I try and maximise, and I absolutely loved it today.”

Heaton pass leads to goal

Tom Heaton’s pass upfield to Kobbie Mainoo led to Manchester United’s opening goal of of the game.

The goalkeeper said he and the squad are embracing the football Erik ten Hag is trying to play, and also praised Mainoo for his movement.

“Bruno shouted for me to go long about five seconds before it, so he’s trying to take some credit for it, I think the way we play we are trying to drag teams out. We want to be comfortable at the back with it. Everyone’s adapting to it.

“Kobbie from midfield making that run, it makes a massive difference to have targets to go and hit.”

Andre Onana will likely take over from Heaton in the next senior game against Real Madrid, but the veteran has got the team off to a good start.

He was comfortable with the ball at his feet and looked in-tune with his teammates, with swift, accurate passes.

If Heaton sticks around as number two, we could well see him in the early Carabao Cup rounds this season.
