Manchester United star says he has just had ‘the biggest honour of my career’

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has opened up about how it felt to be captain of the Red Devils at Anfield.

Erik ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference that he knew who would be his captain for the game at Anfield against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Well, it turned out that Scott McTominay was to be the man who would captain Manchester United at Anfield and the Scotsman got off to a good start when he made Liverpool play towards the Kop End in the first half, rather than the second half as usual.

However, the midfielder struggled to really get involved in the game as he was the Bruno Fernandes replacement as the Portuguese star was suspended.

“It’s the biggest honour of my career, to captain this football club once and then twice,” McTominay told Sky Sports after the game.

“I’ve been a young boy here, I know the system and the process to come through. It’s one of the biggest honours of my career. I’m thankful to be in this position and I want to go for more.”

The Red Devils were very disciplined when, after five minutes, there was a fear that they could be blown away as Liverpool, as expected, had a fast start against their biggest rivals.

“I think, for a start, we’ve got a number of injuries which don’t help the squad and obviously the rhythm of playing a regular team and stuff like that,” the midfielder explained.

“But we knew it was going to be tough today coming here, and obviously we had to stay calm and stick together. We had moments in the game where we had chances and we could have hurt them.”

McTominay’s position in the team

It was a great honour for the 26-year-old to be captain of the club but, in reality, the midfielder was a passenger at Anfield with 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo excelling ahead of the Scottish academy graduate.

Mainoo was exceptional and it was his pass that sent Alejandro Garnacho away but the Argentine couldn’t sort his feet out and Trent Alexander-Arnold got back well.

When Bruno Fernandes is back into the team, there are certainly question marks over how the engine room will line up when the Red Devils travel to the London Stadium next Saturday. Mainoo has to start, McTominay, meanwhile, may well have to be on the bench.
