Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek says he has high expectations for incoming signing Andre Onana.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to clinch his move to Manchester United shortly, having flown in for his medical last night, Sky Sports reported.

He will rejoin former manager Erik ten Hag, who he played under at Ajax. He also knows Lisandro Martinez and Antony too, who he played alongside.

Another, a forgotten figure in recent months, is Donny van de Beek, who knows him well.

Van de Beek on Onana

Donny van de Beek made his comeback for the first team after six months out injured, in Manchester United’s pre-season win over Lyon.

Speaking after the win, he was quizzed about Andre Onana, and revealed he has stayed in touch with the go

The MEN: “He’s a great goalkeeper, I played with him for many years and he’s a great personality. He’s good with his feet, he’s good on his line and my expectations are high for him, he’s a great person as well.

“I still speak with him sometimes and he’s a top-class goalie.”

Even if they only cross over briefly in Manchester, Donny van de Beek will be able to help Onana settle, and integrate easily with the rest of the squad on pre-season tour.

Van de Beek lifeline

Donny van de Beek scored the winner for Manchester United against Lyon, netting a volley after a cross from Dan Gore.

It was classic Van de Beek, finding space inside the penalty area and hitting the shot first time. Manchester United fans haven’t seen enough of this, but Erik ten Hag will recognise the traits.

Most expect Van de Beek to move on this summer, he needs to play regularly to rebuild his career. His goal helped put himself in the shop window, however, it may just have given himself a lifeline too.
