Manchester United picked up a hard-fought and gritty 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday night.

The Red Devils came into the game under a huge amount of pressure, particularly after the struggles in recent weeks to get a win or any defensive solidity in the side.

United, though, showed that they are willing to dig in and grind out a vital victory to ease the pressure on the manager Erik ten Hag after a tumultuous few weeks.

One player, in particular, has been a key figure for the Red Devils, whether it’s this season or any of the past three seasons at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes’ goal

Bruno Fernandes scored a stunning volley against Vincent Kompany’s side and that was enough for the Red Devils to pick up the three points which was desperately needed.

The superb volleyed effort from the midfielder dragged United over the line after Burnley, truth be told, dominated the first half of the game in Lancashire.

The Portuguese midfielder has always been there for the Red Devils when they have needed him most and the former Sporting Lisbon man once again showed his importance to Ten Hag and United.

Ro Ferdinand’s reaction

The stunning volleyed effort from the midfielder, after a superb crossfield pass by Jonny Evans, was a real captain’s contribution and former United defender Rio Ferdinand was seemingly pleased with the midfielder’s impact on proceedings.

The former defender, speaking on X, wrote simply: “Bruno” with a clapping hands emoji. It’s hard to disagree.

Fernandes, since he moved to the club in the January transfer market in 2020, has been a consistent performer for the Red Devils and his stunning volleyed finish is just another superb example of that.

Last month Ferdinand hit out at the criticism Fernandes was receiving. He told Five: “I swear to you, the flak that he was getting, over the last week, I’ve been sitting there with my mouth wide open thinking ‘how dare these people talk like that’.

“He’s been the most creative player in the league last season. He’s the most creative player again at this point of the season so far, the first player to hit 10 goal opportunities created for his teammates.

“Since he’s come to the club he’s outperformed every single player at the football club in terms of goals created, chances, goals, assists.”

Once again he was the difference maker for Manchester United last night. The midfielder’s availability and consistency has meant he has always been a fan favourite and Fernandes surely needs to be in the conversation for best player in the Premier League debates.
