Bruno Fernandes will look back on last night as an unforgettable game where he captained Manchester United to victory over Barcelona.

Just like he dreamed of. But early on, the game turned into a bit of a nightmare for him.

Fernandes blew a clear cut chance, before being penalised for a foul with Barcelona awarded a penalty.

United went in 1-0 down at half-time, before a tactical switch brought Fernandes back into his preferred number 10 position.

Within minutes of the restart Fernandes had provided an assist for Fred to score, the 11th goal he has set up this season.

Fernandes was thrilled with the result, and his message after the game on Instagram focuses on ‘not giving up’.

There was a cheeky response from teammate Anthony Elanga, who responded to refer to Fernandes as ‘My Portuguese guy’.

This was a dig at Barcelona boss Xavi, who had referred to Fernandes as ‘the Portuguese guy’ before the game.

Fernandes praises Martinez

Bruno Fernandes sent a message on Instagram too, hailing the efforts of rock solid defender Lisandro Martinez.

Martinez had hailed ‘the teamwork, the character, the rocking stands’ as he reflected on a big win.

Fernandes responded to affectionately calling the centre-back as ‘My butcher’, in reference to his nickname.

Both players will now be expected to focus on making a swift recovery, with a cup final up next on Sunday.
