Manchester United defender Luke Shaw starred again in central defence as the Red Devils beat Aston Villa.

Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane have all failed to score against Luke Shaw as a centre-back this season.

You can now add an in-form Ollie Watkins to the list, after Manchester United shut out Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Shaw partnered Victor Lindelof in central defence as the Red Devils won 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Luke Shaw praised after Manchester United beat Aston Villa

Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin spoke to MUTV following the victory over Aston Villa.

He praised Luke Shaw for his performance, praising his personality, which saw him tussle with Villa’s forwards throughout the 90 minutes.

Dublin told MUTV’s post game show: “He’s got a little edge to him Luke. He doesn’t shy away from a confrontation.

“You have to have it as a defender. He’s not the tallest but never backs away, it lets people know he is there. He’s got everything, got a footballing brain, you need that.”

Shaw has been a revelation at centre-back this season, stepping in when required due to injuries.

Harry Maguire was back on the bench after injury and came on in the 86th minute to help United see out the game and win 1-0, through Bruno Fernandes‘ first half opener.

It was United’s 15th clean sheet in the Premier League this season, and with a changing cast of centre-backs, that is testament to the structure Erik ten Hag has brought to the side.

Shaw has been terrific, whether at centre-back or left-back, and even when Maguire is fully fit, there is no guarantee he gets back into the team.
