Manchester United return for pre-season to kickstart Erik ten Hag era

Manchester United players who haven’t been involved in international fixtures have returned to Carrington to start pre-season under Erik ten Hag.

Today marks the start of pre-season training under the former Ajax manager and he would have had the opportunity to meet several Reds players for the first time.

Players who played for their countries following the conclusion of last season will return to Carrington in dribs and drabs, but the countdown for Tour 2022 on 8 July has officially started.

But Alejandro Garnacho who was on international duty with the Argentina Under-20 side has returned to United early to signal his statement of intent to Ten Hag.

Ten Hag will be eager to stamp his imprint on the squad ahead of the new season under the 52-year-old.

The likes of David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof were part of the group that made their way through the training complex. Returning loanees Donny van de Beek, Antony Martial, Brandon Williams and Ethan Laird were also pictured.

According to the club’s official website, individual testing took place before a planned team meeting under Ten Hag was held for the first time.

United’s pre-season campaign kicks off against fierce rivals Liverpool in Bangkok on 12 July.

Ten Hag’s side will also face Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in Australia, before a clash with Atletico Madrid in Oslo on 30 July.

The following day, the Reds host Rayo Vallecano in our final friendly, in what will be Ten Hag’s first game in charge at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will be hoping that he is reunited with Frenkie de Jong ahead of United departing for our pre-season tour.

The former Ajax midfielder is reportedly closing in on a £69m move to Manchester United from Barcelona and a deal could be sealed this week.

Signing the Netherlands international would ignite Ten Hag’s era and hopefully be the springboard which results in further top-class signings being made this summer.

But for fans, today marks a pivotal day in the calendar as Manchester United return for pre-season to kickstart the Erik ten Hag era.
