Manchester United ‘rejected’ permanent clause for loan star’s exit, player confirms as he is finally presented

Manchester United youngster Alvaro Fernandez is getting adjusted to life back in Spain after securing a loan move to La Liga.

Granada finally presented Alvaro Fernandez to the media on Thursday at a press conference, almost a full three weeks since he sealed his deadline day loan move.

Fernandez made his Granada debut in midweek, playing as a late substitute in a 4-2 defeat against La Liga high fliers Girona.

He was unveiled along with Lucas Boye, a £6 million signing from Spanish competitors Elche.

Alvaro Fernandez clarifies clause

Alvaro Fernandez clarified there is no permanent clause in his loan deal, despite Grenada trying to secure one.

He explained, quoted via AS: “Manchester United rejected it and no agreement was reached.”

Granada excited about deal

Granada sporting director Nicolas Rodriguez told AS he is excited about the arrival of both players they presented.

He told AS: “Lucas and Álvaro are going to give us a leap in quality. They contribute to us and add to us.

“I highlight in both profiles that they both wanted to be here and have done everything possible. They were our first options.”

Fernandez ready for the challenge

Losing to third-placed Girona was not ideal, but Fernandez is urging calm, and is optimistic Granada will have a good season despite ranking down in 18th.

He said he is feeling settled and wants to be a success, adding: “It’s a good group. We have started off with a good fit, but we have also done good things and others that we can hold on to. We must correct errors. 

“There is no need to dramatise the last two defeats. Girona has the same points as Barcelona and Real dominated Inter in the Champions League. We will have a great year.”

Fernandez also spoke about his spell on loan at Preston North End last season where he often played as a wing-back, and insisted he has no qualms about playing in a back four.

He explained: “Last year I had a different coach who played 3-5-2. I feel like a left back.”

Manchester United will be following his progress as he settles into top flight football for the first time.

United’s decision to block a permanent clause shows there is some hope Fernandez can still have a future at the club. It is up to the defender to earn it.
