Manchester United 'pushing' for De Jong and Sesko, says Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United are ‘pushing’ for the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, says Fabrizio Romano.

United are also actively pursuing Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko, and hoping for positive signals from the striker’s camp this week.

Romano on De Jong

Manchester United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong has been dragging on all summer long, and The Athletic has claimed an agreement is in place with Barcelona – but not the player.

The situation has been the same for the past three weeks, and United are understandably growing a little impatient.

Romano says: “Their plan A, B and C is De Jong. They are insisting. This week Man United are pushing for Frenkie de Jong.”

This is positive to hear, because from the outside, it has looked like United are just sitting and waiting for a resolution to come from Barcelona and De Jong’s end.

Perhaps that was the case, and United are now changing tact, to push Barcelona and De Jong into a decision. But this hasn’t worked so far, and ideally, the club wanted this done before pre-season tour.

The deal could drag on until the transfer window closes on September 1. But we can dream of United doing a ‘Raphael Varane style’ unveiling of the Dutch midfielder at the first home game of the season this weekend.

Romano on Sesko

The deal Manchester United have been most actively pursuing over the past week is for young striker Benjamin Sesko.

Romano says there could be activity over the Red Bull Salzburg forward in the coming days, with United awaiting positive signals at his end.

He said: “[This is a] really important week for Sesko. It’s a really important week for his decision. Man United have many contacts with his agents.”

He added that other clubs are ‘keeping tabs’ on the situation, and United will have to continue to press the deal, before commenting: “My feeling is this name will be in the news this week.”

Salzburg’s preference was to only sell Sesko next summer. If they do accept a big offer for the Slovenia international, then they would rather get it over with quickly, to enable them enough time to sign a replacement.
