Manchester United prepared to wait until deadline day to sell Eric Bailly on permanent deal

Manchester United are prepared to wait until transfer deadline day to sell Eric Bailly on a permanent deal, according to the Athletic.

While the Red Devils’ defence has been repeatedly ripped apart during the first two games of the Premier League season, the Ivory Coast international hasn’t formed part of either of Erik ten Hag‘s matchday squads.

The former Villarreal man did feature during pre-season, but with Lisandro Martinez now providing additional competition, Bailly is now United’s fifth choice centre-back.

Despite club captain Harry Maguire continuing to produce underwhelming performances and Argentine Martinez being given a rude awakening to life in the Premier League, it’s highly unlikely that Bailly will be considered for selection against Liverpool with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof both ahead of the Ivorian in the pecking order.

Despite looking a formidable partnership on paper, Varane and Bailly have only ever played one game together and that outing only lasted 38 minutes. That solitary appearance came back in November away to Atalanta in the Champions League before the World Cup winner picked up an injury.

But with Martinez capable of playing in midfield and Maguire continuing to flounder, it does seem baffling that the Bailly and Varane partnership has not been considered at Old Trafford.

Bailly is yet to start a game for the Red Devils in 2022 with his last start for the club coming against Burnley on 30 December – a game in which Jose Mourinho’s first signing for the Reds went off injured.

In the six years the 28-year-old has been at the Theatre of Dreams Bailly has made 113 appearances for the club, 38 of which came in his opening season on M16.

Since then the 46-time Ivory Coast international has averaged just 15 appearances per season and it’s hard to see where appearance number 114 for the Red Devils is going to come from.

The Athletic report: “United have fielded inquiries on Eric Bailly from several teams with talks progressing. West Ham, Marseille, and Monaco are among the latest to make contact.

“United would prefer a straight sale for the centre-back, but a loan is also possible.

“Affording Bailly’s wages will be a hurdle for all suitors, who ideally want a loan deal where United subsidise. United want a direct transfer however and are prepared to wait for deadline day.”

Bailly’s contract expires in two years time and it seems his six-year stay at Manchester United could be coming to an end this summer.
