So even though Weghorst won’t be making a memorable derby entrance this weekend, we took a look at three players who did make their debuts for Manchester United against City…

Sammy McIlroy

After Ballon d’Or winner Denis Law failed a late fitness test, McIlroy who was 17-years-old at the time was included in the starting line-up to face City on 6 November 1971 by Frank O’Farrell.

Undaunted by the prospect of playing in a United side containing the likes of Bobby Charlton and George Best, the Northern Irish teenager scored United’s opener before setting up Brian Kidd and Alan Gowling in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Eric Cantona

What a signing the king was. Having made his shock move from Leeds United, the mercurial Frenchman replaced Ryan Giggs at half-time against City in December 1992 to make his Reds bow.

After a quiet debut against City, Cantona went on to score eight goals from his next six appearances against our rivals.

Patrice Evra

Evra, who made the switch to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2006, was given quite the introduction to life in English football.

Like Nemanja Vidic, United’s legendary former number three endured a difficult start with the Red Devils and he couldn’t get near Trevor Sinclair during his debut.

After a horrendous opening 45 minutes to kickstart his United career, Sir Alex Ferguson hooked Evra at half-time with United trailing City 2-0 at Eastlands.
