Manchester United players who could make first appearance against Manchester City for the club

There are as many as seven Manchester United players who could make their maiden appearance against Manchester City for the club.

Erik ten Hag‘s side travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to face the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

The Dutchman worked with Pep Guardiola during their time together at Bayern Munich. The Spaniard was in charge of the first team and Ten Hag was in charge of Bayern Munich II.

Having won four Premier League games in a row, Ten Hag’s Reds face the acid test, but having already beaten Liverpool and Arsenal this season, the twenty-time league champions will fancy their chances of beating their fierce rivals.

Ahead of Sunday’s 2pm kick off, here are seven Manchester United players who could make their maiden appearance against Manchester City for the club.

Diogo Dalot

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka being favoured over the in-form Portuguese in recent years, Dalot, who was signed from Porto by Jose Mourinho four years ago, has never featured against Manchester City.

The 23-year-old is rapidly becoming one of Ten Hag’s key men and he’ll be hoping to have the same influence for the Red Devils as his compatriot Joao Cancelo does for City.

Raphael Varane

The World Cup winner missed both of United’s league defeats last season following his move from Real Madrid.

The Frenchman played against City four times during his trophy-laden time with Los Blancos, and the four-time Champions League winner will have to be at his best to keep Erling Haaland quiet.

Lisandro Martinez

Just like the Liverpool game earlier in the campaign, the Argentine will likely relish the frantic tempo of which the derby clash will be played at.

Martinez has never faced City, but he did a very good job dominating Haaland when Ajax beat Borussia Dortmund 4-0 at home in the Champions League last season.

Tyrell Malacia

The former Feyenoord left-back has never pitted himself against the Citizens, but he did play against Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne in the Netherlands’ 1-0 win against Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.

Having played against Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka already this season, United’s number 12 could see himself directly come up against the likes of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva or Riyad Mahrez on City’s right.

The Brazilian serial winner’s wait to make his first Premier League start may go on considering Scott McTominay’s imperious form.

Like Varane, Casemiro also faced City four times during his stint at the Santiago Bernabeu. United’s number 18 was part of the Real Madrid side that knocked out City in the Champions League semi-finals before ousting Liverpool in the final.

Christian Eriksen

The Danish playmaker didn’t feature against City during his short spell with Brentford, but Eriksen has an impressive record against the blue half of Manchester judging by his time with Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur.

Eriksen has one goal and two assists from his last five starts for club and country, and hopefully the midfield maestro puts on another passing clinic come Sunday.

Having scored on his Manchester United debut like he did for Ajax and Brazil, United’s number 21 will be hoping to score in back-to-back Premier League games when the Reds head to City.

After scoring on his United debut against Arsenal, the 22-year-old has already shown that he relishes playing on the big stage, and the joga bonito forward will be hoping to grab the headlines in his first appearance against City.
