Manchester United’s first Premier League match after the World Cup will see Nottingham Forest head to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils and Forest haven’t played against one and other for 23 years.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side beat Ron Atkinson’s Forest 8-1 at the City Ground the last time the sides met in February 1999, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came off the bench to score four goals across 13 minutes for the Busby Babes.
Ahead of two of the biggest sides in the country renewing their rivalry, United in Focus has picked out six Manchester United players that have played against Nottingham Forest during their careers.
Manchester United players that have played against Nottingham Forest
Tom Heaton
The three-time England international has only made one senior appearance for the Red Devils and that came as a substitute against Young Boys in the Champions League last December.
Interim boss Ralf Rangnick brought Heaton on to replace Dean Henderson against the Swiss side.
Heaton’s appearances came during his time with Cardiff City and Burnley. He won five of the ten games, lost three times and drew the other two with him registering three clean sheets against Forest.
Harry Maguire

The world’s most expensive defender beat Forest in his only appearance against the promoted side.
Sheffield United beat Forest 3-1 at Bramhall Lane in the third-round of the 2013-14 FA Cup.
With Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane forming part of the World Cup final, United’s captain will be hoping to make his fourth Premier League start of the season against Forest.
Axel Tuanzebe
Tuanzebe’s only appearance against Forest was an absolute cracker, and one the former England Under-21 international will likely never forget.
During his first loan spell with Aston Villa for the 2018-19 campaign, the Villains and Forest played out a ten-goal thriller, which finished 5-5, at Villa Park.
The 25-year-old was recently pictured back out on the grass, at Carrington, for the first time since July, but his return to action will be carefully managed.
Phil Jones

United’s forgotten man wasn’t named in the club’s Premier League squad, and he didn’t even get a mention when Ten Hag announced his squad for the winter training camp in Spain earlier this month.
United’s number four, who alongside David de Gea are the only players to remain from United’s last Premier League winning side, played against Forest in the 2009/10 League Cup when he was at Blackburn Rovers.
Rovers won the third-round tie 1-0 at the City Ground. It remains to be seen when and if Jones will be seen on a football pitch once again.
Di’Shon Bernard
Bernard’s only appearance for the United first time came back in 2019 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer selected a youthful side to face Astana in Kazakhstan.
The former Chelsea youngster was unfortunate to score an own-goal on his senior debut.
During his season-long loan at Championship side Hull City last season, Bernard played the full game in the Tigers’ 2-1 defeat at Forest.
Tom Huddlestone
United’s Under-21s player/coach, who was capped four times by the Three Lions, played Forest 11 times during his time with Derby County and Hull.
The 35-year-old’s record in those games was four wins, six draws and one loss.
