Manchester United are reported to be willing to discuss a new contract with right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s three summer signings in 2019 have had mixed success. He signed off on the sale of winger Dan James just two years later, and he is now playing in the Championship.

Harry Maguire was the most expensive signing. He is now being strongly linked with an exit from the club, with West Ham bidding for his services, via The Times.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, on the other hand, looks to have won over new manager Erik ten Hag, after a strong second half to last season.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka lined up for new deal

The Mail report Manchester United plan to hold talks with Aaron Wan-Bissaka over signing a new contract.

The new deal would involve an increase to Wan-Bissaka’s current £100,000 per-week wages.

Wan-Bissaka’s current deal runs to June 2024, although United have the option to extend to 2025.

Even if that extension was triggered, United would be in a situation next summer where he would only have 12 months left to run on his deal, so the club are looking at a long-term solution.

Wan-Bissaka has won Erik ten Hag over

At the start of last season, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s prospects were not looking good. He had a fringe role in pre-season, with Diogo Dalot preferred as a starter.

All the way up to the World Cup, Dalot was clear first choice and Wan-Bissaka struggled with injuries, before seizing his opportunity in January.

In the second half of last season, Wan-Bissaka was the better of the two right-backs and was selected to start in the FA Cup final.

United extended Dalot’s contract earlier this summer and rejected the chance to pursue another right-back. The only challenger, long-term, could be young prospect Marc Jurado.

A potential new deal for Wan-Bissaka would be well-earned, and a real vote of confidence from the manager.

It is significant, based on how last season started, that a new contract for Wan-Bissaka is being discussed at all.
