Manchester United are yet to replace Edinson Cavani who left the club as a free agent at the end of June, and Anthony Martial’s injury early in the season has highlighted the lack of depth the former Ajax manager has at his disposal.

Mason Greenwood remains unavailable for selection and wantaway talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is slowly building up his match fitness having played no part in the club’s pre-season tour.

According to ESPN, Ten Hag is keen to add a physical back-up striker to his squad and the former Chelsea striker Morata has been offered to the Reds.

The 29-year-old has a year left on his contract at Atletico Madrid and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Juventus.

Manchester United were interested in signing the Spaniard from Real Madrid in 2017 when Jose Mourinho was at the helm, but the twenty-time league champions instead opted to sign Romelu Lukaku for £75m.

While the Reds signed the Belgian from Everton, Chelsea paid Los Blancos £60m to bring Morata to Stamford Bridge.

Like many Chelsea number nine’s, Morata struggled to live up to the big price tag in west London and only spent 18 months with the Blues before returning to his homeland via a loan switch to Atletico Madrid.

The 56-time Spain international scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for the Blues before joining Diego Simeone’s side on a permanent deal.

Morata scored 11 Premier League goals in his only full season in England and he played alongside United’s number seven during their time together at Madrid and Juventus.

Atletico’s number 19 warmed up for the new season by netting a hat-trick against his former club Juventus in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Morata was involved in Atletico’s pre-season against United at the end of last month and he was on the receiving end of Fred’s rash stamp which resulted in the Brazilian getting sent off.
