Manchester United miss out as Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes set to join Wolves

Manchester United’s midfield is in need of drastic improvement. We knew that before the start of the season, and two defeats has further highlighted the point.

United’s top target is Frenkie de Jong, which feels like it is unlikely to get done. One of the alternatives to De Jong we suggested last month was Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

In June, Portuguese newspaper Correio do Manha linked Nunes with a move to Manchester United.

While it didn’t seem like United were going to pursue this option, it’s now off the table. Record report Nunes is set to join Wolves for £38 million.

Matheus Nunes set to join Wolves

Nunes is a real coup for Wolves. He is a midfielder who would have graced United’s midfield and stylistically he would have been an excellent De Jong alternative.

The 23-year-old has been a key player for Sporting over the past couple of seasons, earning a call-up to the Portugal side.

The move to Wolves shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the successful way they have raided the Portuguese league over the years.

United are pursuing Adrien Rabiot, a deal at £19 million with add-ons which comes in at half the price of Wolves’ Nunes fee. But rather than looking like a cheaper, savvy option, the move just feels fairly uninspired.

Unclear if any impact on Ruben Neves

Manchester United have been loosely linked with Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves this summer. It’s unclear if this move has any impact on his future.

Sky Sports reported 10 days ago that Neves was among the options if the club wanted alternatives to Frenkie de Jong.

Wolves may be planning on partnering Neves and Nunes at present, but the new addition could still end up as his replacement.

Manchester United haven’t taken reported interest in Neves forward, but if they choose to, then Wolves could recoup the fee spent on Nunes and cash in. Let’s keep an eye on this one.
