Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay appears to have seen his Bayern Munich chance pass him by with the Bundesliga champions moving on from a number of Premier League transfer targets.
Bayern, according to sporting director Cristoph Freund, are no longer prioritising midfield additions. In addition to blocking out a move for Fulham’s Joao Palhinha – it also means those shock links with a Manchester United academy graduate are unlikely to re-emerge any time soon.

Bayern Munich looked at Scott McTominay
Bayern, according to Sport Bild, identified Scott McTominay as an alternative to Palhinha back in August. But thanks in part to the emergence of teenager Alexander Pavlovic – who has started three of the last six Bundesliga games in the centre of the park – Thomas Tuchel’s side are putting a new midfielder on the backburner for the time being.
“We wanted (Palhinha) last summer,” Freund explains. “But the priority now was to strengthen ourselves at the back.
“In addition, Alexander Pavlovic has already filled a good role. That’s why we believe we have a good alternative internally.”
Manchester United’s most divisive player?
Bayern did complete the signing of England international Eric Dier last week. Dier is viewed by Tuchel as a player who can be deployed in midfield, even if he has featured almost solely as a centre-half in recent seasons at Tottenham Hotspur.
McTominay, meanwhile, continues to face questions over his role with Manchester United, despite an impressive run of goalscoring form under Erik ten Hag.
For all the Scot’s box-crashing capabilities, his presence in the middle of the park arguably does more harm than good with United struggling to control proceedings either from an attacking or a defensive standpoint.
United may be open to offers for McTominay in the summer – but it is clearly very unlikely Bayern revisit their interest.
