Erik ten Hag has been told that he made the wrong decision during the summer for Manchester United that involved Harry Maguire.
Manchester United picked up a crucial 2-1 win over Brentford thanks to two stoppage-time goals from Scott McTominay but Harry Maguire’s performances stood out.
The English central defender was colossal for United during the game but it hasn’t always been easy for the former Leicester City defender.
Maguire was stripped of the club captaincy during the summer in favour of Bruno Fernandes which was a universally popular decision made by Erik ten Hag, although not everyone thinks so.
Obi Mikel on Maguire
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was certainly not happy with the Dutchman’s decision to change his captain.
“You don’t change a club captain, you can change the pitch, you don’t change a club captain if he’s still there. If he’s not playing he’s not the captain, if he’s on the pitch he’s the captain,” Mikel said.
“A club captain should always remain a club captain. I’m not saying he should play, I’m saying he should remain a club captain. Once he departs the club then you can appoint another club captain.”
Ten Hag had attempted to sell Maguire
Manchester United were ready to cash in on Harry Maguire this summer, however, the defender chose not to go.
Removal as club captain was a blow for Maguire, but it could end up working in his favour, taking him out the limelight.
The scrutiny on a club captain can, at times, be a lot and Maguire’s performances on the pitch haven’t always been consistent.
Since then, every time the defender has started games he has looked more assured in himself and his own performances, it may just work out.
