Luke Shaw has signed a new contract with Manchester United. It may just be the club’s most significant piece of business in 2018.
United announced Shaw’s new contract yesterday, which runs until 2023. Shaw’s contract had been scheduled to expire at the end of this season.
Over the past 12 months Shaw has recaptured the form which led to United spending close to £30 million on him in 2014.
He has gained the trust of manager Jose Mourinho and is a regular starter. He even looks like a future United captain.
If he had chosen to walk away, it would have been a nightmare scenario.

Left-back is a tough position to fill, and after spending four years trying to get Shaw right, having him walk away after finally cracking it would have been a real kick in the teeth.
It also would have been a damning indictment on Shaw’s opinion about the club’s direction.

His decision to stay is good news. United don’t have to waste time and resources trying to repair a hole left by his departure.
We can focus on fixing other areas in need of improving.
MORE UNITED STORIES
United’s business was sparse in the summer. We signed Fred for big money, although it’s too early to say how he will pan out, likewise with Diogo Dalot.
Early signs look promising, but finally, we know what we have in Shaw. He looks like a special player again.
Keeping him is huge.
