Manchester United defender Alvaro Fernandez was picked to make his first ever La Liga start for Granada… against Barcelona.
An impressive performance from the bench for Granada last week earned Alvaro Fernandez a first start for his loan club.
It was not a straightforward one, with the former Real Madrid academy defender selected in the starting line-up for Granada at home to Barcelona.
Fernandez was selected as a left wing-back, and he was able to reflect on a successful evening.
How Alvaro Fernandez fared against Barcelona
Alvaro Fernandez helped his Granada side come away with a point, although they will regret that it was not all three.
Fernandez played 60 minutes before making way as part of a double substitution.
At this stage Granada were 2-1 up. They had actually raced into a 2-0 lead, with Barcelona pulling one back at the end of the first half.
Xavi’s side piled on the pressure and eventually scored an equaliser in the 85th minute to claim a point, with Granada hanging on to ensure they took something from the game and did not fall victim to a late comeback.
Fernandez can take some accomplishment from the fact Granada were leading during his time on the pitch.
Journalist Sam Tighe wrote on Twitter X, of Fernandez’s performance: “I like the way he throws his shoulder into challenges and duels for the ball. A few lovely turns and swivel too.”
The Manchester United loanee completed two successful dribbles, won one tackle, made two interceptions, and seven ball recoveries.
Fernandez loan caused a stir at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag did not feel Alvaro Fernandez was ready to start for the club, and sent him out on loan.
This came after he signed Sergio Reguilon instead, a more experienced player, as cover for injured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
It was a risky strategy as it still depended on Reguilon staying fit. While Diogo Dalot can provide cover too, an injury to Aaron Wan-Bissaka means he is required at right-back full time.
Reguilon’s recent injury has turned a further spotlight on the choice to loan out Fernandez.
Some would feel if he is good enough to start against Barcelona, then Manchester United could probably do with him.
