Manchester United loanee James Garner makes it 10 goal contributions this season

Manchester United loanee James Garner inspired Nottingham Forest to a crucial victory over West Bromwich Albion to give their promotion hopes a boost.

Garner, 21, was recently named by Bruno Fernandes as the Manchester United youngster he is most looking forward to playing alongside.

The young midfielder had a vital contribution as Forest beat West Brom 4-0 to consolidate their position in the play-offs and kill off any faint hopes the Baggies had of reaching the top six.

Garner played a key role in Forest’s opening two goals in the victory at the City Ground.

Garner won the penalty which led to Forest’s opener. His shot was stopped by West Brom player Darnell Furlong’s hand, who was sent off.

The Manchester United loanee then provided an assist from a corner-kick, a trait he is becoming quite skilled at.

Garner’s corner was headed in by Ryan Yates to make it 2-0. Forest then made it three through a wondergoal from Jack Colback, before adding a fourth in stoppage time.

The assist was the 10th goal contribution Garner has made since signing on loan for Forest. His season tally stands at four goals and six assists.

Garner was named by Sky Sports as man of the match, having touched the ball 89 times, more than any midfielder on the pitch. He created two chances, and made three interceptions, while completing 88 per cent of his passes.

Five of these assists have come in the last 10 games, with the youngster picking up form at exactly the right time.

Forest are in fifth place in the Championship and look set to have a crack at promotion through the play-offs. If successful, expect them to make a push to loan Garner in the Premier League next season.

That will be worth considering, but you could understand if incoming boss Erik ten Hag was looking forward to working with the youngster too.
