Manchester United linked to Moussa Dembele: A striker with a lot to prove

Manchester United are interested in a potential a move for Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, The Mail report.

United are claimed to be monitoring his situation with a view to a £25 million summer move, with his contract at Lyon set to expire in 2023.

His name sounds familiar…

Dembele has been linked to United numerous times before. The Express reported back in 2013 how United were keen on him while he was at Fulham, just 17.

The Mail then reported in 2016 how United were scouting him at Celtic, with Jose Mourinho interested in a potential move.

A report from The Sun claimed in 2020 that United were lining up a £60 million move to sign Dembele from Lyon, although like all the other times, it amounted to nothing, with United preferring to sign ageing strikers instead.

This latest link to United could simply be an agent-driven link to United again, to pump up interest in the striker. But given the very affordable fee of £25 million, this could be the type of deal the club consider, as it would allow more money to still be spent in other areas.

Dembele has a lot to prove

Dembele was once talked up by former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, who told The Mail: “He is a very big signing for Celtic. I like to follow the progress of exciting, young French players and I know Bayern, Monaco and Juve were all looking at him.”

During his time at Celtic, Dembele scored 51 goals in just over two seasons, earning a big money move to Lyon in 2018.

Dembele had a fantastic start in Lyon, scoring 44 goals in two seasons, including knocking Manchester City out of the Champions League. But after that, he had a real season to forget.

Last season he began poorly, scoring just once in 16 matches for Lyon, before a loan at Atletico Madrid, in which he failed to score in seven appearances, and the Spanish club chose not to take up a purchase option.

Still only 25, Dembele has begun to rebuild his confidence, scoring nine goals in 19 Ligue 1 games. A real surge in form is showing he could be back to his best.

Hitting form

In the past eight matches, Dembele has scored five goals and provided two assists. This is the type of form he needs to attract potential suitors.

Throw out his one poor season, and Dembele has been pretty consistent. His pace and quick feet make him an explosive striker who will score goals for United if given the chance.

But for certain, he is not at the stage of his career where he would have hoped to be a couple of seasons ago, and would arrive in the Premier League with a point to prove.

He will probably need to finish this season strongly. If he can keep up his recent prolific form, he may stand a better chance of convincing United to splash out.
